What is a lag switc h and how it works? This article talks about everything related to these breeds of switches.
Introduction:
The gaming and networking tech worlds are intertwined in current times and both are witnessing exponential advancement in terms of speeds and ease of access. But, these advancements are also made in terms of cheating and exploiting gaming experiences. One such tech is lag switches which are designed to do something that serves only for a few people. This article explains the question " What is a lag switc h" and how it works?
What is a Lag Switc h ?
To understand, let's first understand how an ordinary switch works in our networks and what is a lag in our gaming experience. Lag is a typical problem for those who play online games and is not just related to lag switches. Lag is network latency and can appear due to a sluggish connection or just a network bottleneck that occasionally causes the connection to fail for a few seconds.
So what is the switch? when you are playing an online game through a router and a switch connected to your home network, two signals are sent out and in from your console or PC. One is your input from the keyboard/game controller and one is a response from the server and all of these signals flow through switches.
Both these signals enable data to flow freely when playing normally, but when a lag switch is introduced instead of an ordinary one, the outgoing connection is cut off for a period of one to ten seconds without also disconnecting the inbound connection. This is the prime function of the lag switch. But what's the use of this lag introduced in the network?
Due to this, the player gets increased target's mobility and attack capabilities while briefly rendering them impervious to hits. The system caches your activities during this time and synchronizes with you once the connection is restored. Your system will then communicate what you did and document any injuries you have received. During this time, everything you do will be visible to your opponents in a way that it happened in that instant.
How does Lag Switch Work?
So, when activated, it immediately makes intentional delays in the out signals from your gaming device and disrupts the communication between the player's device and the game server he was attached to his network. The rather simple hack interrupts the Rx pair of the ethernet connection while allowing the Tx pair to continue transmitting (TX and RX are abbreviations for Transmit and Receive).
After this, the player gets the advantage he intended to get, and the lag switch is then deactivated. This cheating practice works pretty neatly but is ethically and morally wrong. These switches confuse gaming clients with these disruptions by giving the impression that that particular game is experiencing networking issues. This is exploited by players who use latency as a means of cheating in a game.
You will find many easy tutorials online that teach you how to make it. You will need a simple Cat5e Cable (internet cable), a push button switch, a soldering iron, and extra write to build this at home. With this lag switch made with simple stuff and will cost you under 5 dollars in total, one can launch an online game, then flip the switch to the off position when the game launches or you're under attack in an online game.
This will cause your team's and your opponent's connection to slow down or end altogether while you go around murdering anybody you like. Famous games like Call of Duty, World of Tanks, and Halo series are all reported to be easily cheated with a lag switch.
Wrapping Up:
What is a lag switc h? It can be concluded that this device falls into cheating as it disrupts the network for one player's advantage. It can be created with very little technical expertise and works to deceive the game server into accepting client-side updates (which are still accepted without restriction), at least until the time of writing.
